Find some relief with our top essential oils for anxiety
We’re currently experiencing a once in a lifetime event, with COVID19 causing families to separate and self-isolating for safety. At All About Eve at Home, we know people are feeling anxious and stressed with the unknown end date.
However, what we can do is help you find some natural fragrances that will offer you a break and probably some well-deserved relaxation.
We’ve put together a list of our favourite fragrances and essential oils for anxiety. They will help you relax and chill out, regardless of what is going on outside your front door.
If you’re also struggling to sleep, take a look at our list of sleep-inducing fragrances.
Why do scents help your mind?
Scents and smells are the only sense to be sent straight to the limbic system, rather than through a relay system. The limbic system directly controls emotions and memories, which is why smells can get strong memory responses and help your brain determine the environment. Therefore, your nose plays a really important part of creating an environment that your brain can relax in.
Lavender
Everyone is aware of the benefits of lavender for sleep. But, did you know it can be equally powerful when helping to reduce stress and anxiety? In 2017 it was shown to impact the part of the brain the controls emotions, the limbic system.
The great thing about lavender is that it can come in many forms. If you have some in your garden, take some time to sit near it and breathe in the scent. Plus, you often find it in some of those beauty products sitting at the back of the cupboard.
Our Herb Garden fragrance collection, has perfectly balanced lavender with pine and rosemary, for a relaxing but fresh and uplifting scent.
Rose
A prevalent scent for centuries, rose fragrance oils reduce stress and increase calmness. We love it when we’re having a bath, taking 30 minutes for ourselves to breathe and relax.
Additionally, the great thing about rose oils is that you can pair it with most other scents. So, if you’re looking to relax before bed, try it with deep scents like patchouli or sandalwood. Or, if you want something more uplifting try it with orange and jasmine.
For a wonderful feminine scent that will help you de-stress, our Rose & Geranium is a combination of rose, geranium and vanilla.
Jasmine
Jasmine is one of our favourite flowers, with its small white flowers greeting us on a summer’s eve. However, not only can it bring feelings, well-being and love, it was shown to calm the nervous system. Plus, it doesn’t make you sleepy, unlike a lot of other relaxing fragrances.
Jasmine is similar to lavender, where you can find it naturally outdoors, even in our climate. However, you might have to wait a few more weeks for it to flower, when it does make sure you can sit near it and enjoy the fragrance on a summer’s evening.
If you don’t have any Jasmine in your garden, try our White Gardenia collection. It combines a range of summer flowers that bloom in the evening, including Jasmine, Gardenia and Honeysuckle. Perfect to bring the garden indoors and help you relax.
Or, if you’re looking for a 15 minute at home spa experience, Spacemasks use Jasmine to gently warm your face and de-stress your mind.
Bergamot or Orange
One of our personal favourites, bergamot is a fantastic citrus fragrance. It sits somewhere between a grapefruit, lemon and orange with a unique scent. In 2015, a study showed it improved moods and relieved anxiety. The natural citrus fragrances uplift the whole house and bring relief.
If you can’t get hold of bergamot, orange also does a very similar job with its bouncy citrus fragrance. It uplifts and freshens the atmosphere bringing you joy. If you can’t get hold of fragrance oils, cut up some oranges and enjoy eating them for a boost.
Ylang ylang
You have probably smelt Ylang ylang whenever you enter a spa or had a massage. So why is it so popular as an essential oil for anxiety?
In 2006, a study on nurses showed that combined with bergamot and lavender; it lowered stress, blood pressure and heart rate. That’s a pretty powerful combination to help defeat anxiety.
Frankincense
Traditionally known for its part in the Nativity, Frankincense is an ancient fragrance oil, used for thousands of years. However, more recently, in 2008, it has been shown to reduce anxiety, depression and pain. It’s particularly powerful when combined with Lavender and Bergamot.
